How much is the Festival de Cannes worth at the box office? Analysis of the earnings of the award-winning films at the '23 edition.
With the start of the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) here and considering Cannes' presence at the Oscars and the box office, I found it interesting to look at the numbers of this year's winners.
Overall, the winning films of the official section 2023 have accumulated €75M worldwide so far."Anatomy of a Fall" won the Palme d'Or, garnered five Oscar nominations, and won two Golden Globes. Justine Triet's film has grossed over €24M to date. In the United States, the film has already grossed $4.4M (€4.1 million) and is still active in 220 theaters, where it grossed $135K over the past weekend. It has been in the North American box office for 17 weeks.
"The Zone of Interest" won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes and has grossed €7 million. The movie has recently premiered in major markets such as France, where it made €1.4M in its first weekend, and the United Kingdom, where it grossed €700K. Moreover, it has already made €690K in Spain since its release three weeks ago.
The third big winner of Cannes 2023 was Aki Kaurismäki's film, "Fallen Leaves." Despite not receiving an Oscar nomination, the film has performed exceptionally well at the box office. This success is particularly impressive given that the film's budget was only one-tenth of that of the other two titles. The movie has earned €5.5M worldwide, making it the director's most commercially successful film to date.
Hirokazu Koreeda's movie "Monster" was awarded the Best Screenplay Award at Cannes. The movie has earned a total of €19.6M worldwide since its release, with Japan and South Korea contributing €12.8M and €3.26M respectively. France and the United States were the other significant markets where the film performed well.
"Perfect Days" has already grossed nearly €13.4M worldwide and has been nominated for the Oscar for Best International Film. The film will be released in the United States in the following days. In Spain, "Perfect Days" had already grossed €945K, being one of the most successful films by Wim Wenders.
"The Taste of Things" received the Best Director Award and has earned €3.1M worldwide at the box office. The movie is going to be released in the United States this week. Its best performance was in France, where it is originally from, but it has also achieved good results in other countries such as the Netherlands, almost €1M, and Spain, €375K.
The Spanish co-production titled "Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell" is yet to be released in Spanish theaters. However, it has already earned a gross box office collection of €310K from international markets. Of this, €200K has been collected from France, and €50K has been collected from the United States. Kino Lorber managed the distribution in the US.
